Watermelon Rooh Afza Popsicles

It is almost that time of the year folks. Ramzan/Ramadan is a month observed by Muslims world over by fasting from sunrise to sunset and focusing more on spiritual needs. It is a time to both be grateful for ones blessings and to assist those less fortunate. With Ramzan falling in the summer this year I thought it fitting to share with you these delightful Watermelon Rooh Afza popsicles. It is my spin on a deeply delicious and incredibly satisfying drink that my mother makes. Now I turn it into a refreshing and simple popsicle for my girls who share my love for watermelon and Rooh Afza. In these popsicles the Watermelon is the star and the Rooh Afza a back note. Should you want to up the Rooh Afza flavor feel free to just add more.

Rooh Afza, for those of you unfamiliar with it, is a concentrated syrup with a variety of 'cooling' ingredients. It is a medley of fruit, herbs, and even rosewater. It tastes almost punch-like and is definitely a sweet treat. Traditionally because of these 'cooling' properties it is thought of as a Ramzan drink. However, now  evidence suggests that this sweet syrup may not be the healthiest thing to consume by the litre 😉 I use it in moderation here and choose not to feel guilty about it. You've gotta live a little right?

Also the kids love it, especially my littlest one who regularly requests one. It surprises me a little since these are not remotely close to grocery store popsicles in their sweetness, but that doesn't seem to perturb her watermelon loving soul in the slightest.

Two red popsicles infused with rooh afza rest on ice cubes atop a white plate with a colorful floral pattern, all placed on a light wooden surface.

Author: Sarah Mir

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cubed seedless watermlon
  • ⅓ to ½ cup Rooh Afza can add more if needed
  • Juice of ½ a lemon
  • Tiny pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Blend all the ingredients together
  • Strain into a bowl and taste, adjust rooh afza or lemon to liking
  • Freeze into your molds of choice! This recipe filled 10 3-oz popsicle molds.

Notes

The watermelon is the star and really affects the taste - adjust the other ingredients to compensate if the watermelon does not have a sweet ripeness to it.
